Especially when the hero is dangling off the edge of a cliff or a movie’s big twist is just about to be revealed.

Imagine if, at the climax of The Empire Strikes Back, your internet stops dead just as Darth Vader is about to say that line. It definitely wouldn’t have the same impact, would it?

Discs, however, whether they be 4K Blu Ray or standard DVDs, don’t have that problem.

At this point you might be thinking: “Okay, I can get on board with Blu Ray, but what’s the point in DVDs anymore?”

The Old Classics: Only Viewable
in Physical

While the quality of many DVDs will probably be the same as (or maybe even worse than) what you would get on a streaming service, particularly for older discs, there are a few good reasons why DVDs still matter.

For one, there are plenty of films that never made it to streaming services – even classics!

Particularly shocking is that there could be any films by the legendary Alfred Hitchcock missed out. But his 1940s masterpiece Rebecca is unavailable everywhere you look. You can’t even buy or rent it on any of the online streaming platforms!

The only way you can watch it then is by buying the DVD – unless you want to watch the not-so-hot 2020 Netflix Original remake!

Now, both of these films are available to buy or rent on online streaming services. But if you’re going to splash the cash, why not buy the DVD and get all the added extras that come with it?

Another big reason to stay loyal to your DVD collection is that very often films on streaming services will be shown in the wrong aspect ratio.

And while some fans won’t care all that much if a movie is cropped, there are plenty of film buffs out there who will want to see the movie as it was intended!

Beyond that, though, is the fact that you can preserve movies by building a collection, and commemorate your favourite films by going back to them again and again.

With so much of the experience of cinema lost in this day and age, surely that reverence for the films you really love is worth holding onto.

In that year, 18.84 million vinyl records were sold in the United States alone, which was up by almost 15% on the previous year. This becomes even more impressive when you realise they only count the sale of new vinyl. Who knows just how massive the number would be if they counted used vinyl sales too!

And speaking of new vinyl, it’s worth mentioning that just about every artist these days will release their music on vinyl as well as on CD and digital formats, no matter how big or small they are.

That’s pretty amazing when you think about it, because vinyl first fell out of fashion all the way back in the 1980s and early 1990s when CDs were introduced. At that time, it looked as though vinyl was going away and never coming back!

Vinyl: The Magic Never Disappears

But even after all that, it’s actually not that hard to see why vinyl is doing so well.

With streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music dominating the music scene, it seems a lot of people are looking for ways to enjoy their music that will bring something more to the experience.

When you listen to a new song or album through a streaming service, it’s so easy to lose the magic that comes with seeing the artwork for the first time, reading through the lyrics as you listen and having a look at the track list.

With a vinyl record, you get all of that printed onto a 12-inch sleeve, often with extras inside, too!

And that’s as well as the immensely satisfying feeling you get when you hold the brand new record in your hands, put it on your turntable and watch it spin.

People clearly want the music they love to matter. The extra effort that it takes to search through music stores or change the record as you listen gives you that.

Plus, buying physical copies of an album you love is one of the best ways you can support your favourite artist! This is along with buying other merchandise and tickets to a gig.

And since it’s fairly well known that streams don’t pay artists very well unless they get millions of them, if you want to show an up-and-coming musician some love then why not invest in their album? You can grow your eye-catching collection of beautiful vinyl records as you do.

Hit hard by the rise of streaming, the compact discs that used to line shelves in most people’s homes are on their way to being forgotten.

Unless nostalgia ignites a revival a few years down the line just as it did with vinyl!

Unfortunately, though, it’s not looking good. With streaming accounting for more than three-quarters of all music industry revenue, CD albums have taken a back seat.

But that’s not to say that no one out there is buying CDs. And those that still do will likely be doing so for a few very good reasons.

For one, it’s pretty clear that most people still love having a physical product that they can feel, look through and ultimately keep for however long they want.

Again, it all comes back to feeling connected to the music you care about.

And the sound will also be better on most CDs than it is on digital formats as well!

Just as with DVDs, physical CDs are still the best way to enjoy your favourite music at the highest possible quality.

This has to do with the fact that digital files, whether audio or visual, have to be compressed, which inevitably leads to information being lost.

But while e-book sales were on the rise for a while, by 2020 they had settled.

Today, e-books only account for about 20% of all book sales and the rest are physical books. So why is that?

Maybe it’s because books have been around for so many years and never really changed. Or maybe it’s because a lot of people like to read in order to get away from the screens they stare at all day.

Whatever the reason, rather than embrace another new technology, plenty of people generally still gravitate to good old-fashioned paperback and hardback books!

And in any case, holding a physical book and flicking through the pages have always been a big part of the reading experience. Plus, people love the smell of books and the way they look displayed on a bookshelf!

One thing that has changed though is where people go to get their books.

Many people do still go to bookstores and sometimes libraries for their latest literary fix. But in a lot of cases, it is just a lot more convenient to order a book through an online delivery service and have it sent straight to your door.

Which brings us on to another surprising trend: the recent rise of independent bookstores!

You see, people don’t just love books. They love the stores they buy them in!

So even though there are websites and apps out there that allow you to order whatever books you want, whenever you want, the physical stores that also sell them have still managed to survive and even thrive.

In a bookstore, you can find a sense of community that your Kindle just can’t provide!

You can also browse through thoughtfully curated selections of books that are attractively displayed. It’s an experience that can’t easily be replaced.

If you’re looking to support a local independent bookstore but aren’t sure where your nearest one might be, then not to worry.

You can easily find one using this Indie Bookstore Finder tool! Just input where you live and how far you’re willing to go to buy a book, and it’ll come up with a handy list.

And there are plenty of other bookstores around if you can’t find a good independent nearby, including Barnes & Noble which has 627 stores across the US.

It’s worth bearing in mind that these lists are not exhaustive! And that you can actually buy other forms of physical media at a lot of these websites, too.

So, by looking at all the many reasons why physical media continues to matter in the modern age, it’s clear to see why it’s still managing to thrive in spite of the rapid rise of digital streaming.

Because digital platforms do sadly pose a very real threat to things like music, movies and books. The rise of streaming has changed whole industries!

But still, thanks to the people who continue to love and appreciate the collectible items on which they can enjoy their favourite films or albums, these items are finding new relevancy even today.

Whether a person keeps investing in physical media simply because they like the way it looks and feels when they hold it in their hands, or whether it’s because they want the highest quality versions of the media they care about the most, it doesn’t matter all that much.

What’s important is that there are people out there who really understand just how significant these items are.

Thanks to them, beautiful book covers won’t be confined only to dark e-reader screens anytime soon, and DVD extras such as commentary and behind-the-scenes footage will continue to reach fans all in one neat, convenient package.

And not only does physical media give fans the satisfaction of getting to own and keep a tangible record of something they love – which very often offers more than any digital stream would! – they also get to directly support the artists and stores they buy from. There’s something to be said for that alone.

Here at Octane, we have been wanting to write a post about why we think we have made the best quality affordable theater seat on the market, for a long time. Over the years, we have come to clearly understand that not all chairs are made equal (no surprise) and have wanted to develop an affordable theater seat that we feel proud about putting the Octane name behind. The challenge is not as simple as you may believe.

For one, we did not want to compromise on our warranty and deliver a seat that looks great but will not live up to everyday use for a period of at least 5 years – our standard warranty period. Most of the discount products in this category will generally not last more than 2 – 3 years with regular use. Factors like the mechanisms and upholstery are just not built well enough to handle average usage.

Anyway, without boring you with hundreds of words of text, we decided to create this graphic of the Octane Charger – the BEST VALUE FOR MONEY THEATER CHAIR around – to explain what you get and why it packs such a punch.

Bonded Leather

Most entry-level theater chairs use a polyurethane (PU) cover on all seating surfaces but we choose premium bonded leather because of it’s real and synthetic strengths. Bonded leather is a combination of real leather and PU that is durable and easy to maintain. We did not feel the minor savings from using PU or vinyl would be worth losing the benefits of a bonded leather we know well and that has stood the test of time for years in our product line.

Pocket Coils

Pocket coils are used in the seat cushion (portion which you sit on) over just using a foam core that is found in most entry-level recliners. Pocket coils are similar to the coils one finds in a mattress where the coil support your weight and maintain their resilience significantly better than a pure foam base. Pure foam and dacron bases will eventually flatten and sink. They lose their shape over time, unlike pocket coils which don’t. See our pocket coils on this cut-away of our Nitro model.

Accessory Dock

The accessory dock included on the Charger is simply unique to us and will not be seen on 99% of other brands of recliners. This dock accommodates a wide range of proprietary accessories that Octane developed over years to deliver the ultimate comfort and movie experience. Some of these accessories are wine-glass holders (cheers!), tray tables (wood, glass, plastic), reading lights, popcorn bowls, tablet and phone holders, and so much more.

Chaise Footrest

Chaise footrests do not have any gaps in the footrest when compared to a standard recliner. Chaise footrests always deliver a superior seating and support experience because their is continuous leg support. It costs more to build due to the use of more leather and foam but it powers up the comfort and that is our number one priority.

5 Year Warranty

Wallaway Design

This means the chair can be placed within 4 inches of a wall and still recline fully. Wallaway does not exist in any other chair at this price point. The mechanism moves the seat cushion that you sit on forward when you decide to recline thereby using as little space as possible behind the chair. Place the seating close to a wall and still fully recline.

Removable Seat Backs

Why is this important? Seat backs that can be removed will ensure the seating can make it into rooms that are limited by access to attics or basements - where home theaters are commonly built. It also helps when you want to simply move your chairs between rooms without excessive extra weight.

Plush Padding

The seat back of the Charger is densely padded with foam and dacron so ensure they are plush and comfortable. Octane only uses 1.8 density foam and fiber to ensure resilience and comfort without losing shape and profile. The lower portion the back includes a separate lumbar support section that is bolstered to keep your lower back fully supported.

Chrome Finish

Although our cup holders are not made of chrome, the tops of the cupholders are finished with a chrome finish which gives it a very selective and classy look. You need to not only love the way this furniture feels but also the way it looks!

Space Saving Design

This theater seat is designed to be able to accommodate as many seats as possible in a theater room. This means the armrests are ergonomically slimmer yet the seat back is a respectable 42 inches high. Most entry-level theater chairs cleverly sacrifice costs by reducing the height of the seat back which subtracts from the comfort and support.

Chaise Styled Footrest

How It All Works

We decided to create a cut-away of one of our best sellers – the Octane Nitro. What makes a recliner the ‘best recliner in the world?’ This image clearly demonstrates what elements make up an Octane chair. In this post, we will provide the logic and motivation behind each of these elements so that you can understand why they are there. Needless to say, we destroyed many great new chairs in the process of getting the total picture. It was all worth it because we are thrilled with the end result.

Articulated Full Head Support

The headrest on all models is slightly articulated to provided the perfect degree of support during long hours in front of the TV. This gentle curve is designed to make sure you have the perfect viewing angle to the screen.

Deep Arm Storage Compartments

The in-arm storage is almost an essential requirement on a good media room seat these days. Those remotes and TV guides seem to always find a good place to hide and what better location that right in your seat's armrest where one can effortlessly access it. Storage on Octane seats is deeper than most storage compartments on other brand recliners. We make a point of allowing for extra depth to be able to store the wide range of accessories that are available for this brand.

Wide Metal Cup Holders

Every model made by Octane includes cup holders that can be removed for cleaning. This is essential. Given that they will hold drinks that are going to spill or condense, and then drip to the bottom of the cupholder, cleaning should be a regular process of maintenance on all our models. The standard Octane color is black matte finished stainless steel. Optional silver stainless steel can be included as well at the request of the customer.

Metal Accessory Dock

This stainless steel dock is one of the critical elements of most Octane theater seats. The dock/spindle accommodates a wide range of add-on accessories that can be purchased along with your Octane furniture. These accessories include items like tray tables, reading lights, iPad holders and popcorn buckets to mention just a few. This is your throne and you are the king!

Bucket Style Contour Seating

The seating cushion is slightly concave so that the sides are higher than the center. The benefit is the fact that the padding envelopes your body when you relax back and sit in the chair.

Double Needle Stitching

Double stitching presents a very premium look and ensures that the seams remain uniform and consistent throughout. The strength of a double stitch also enhances the longevity of the seating allowing for years of unmatched comfort and quality.

Full Chaise Footrest

The chaise footrest is a type of footrest that is designed without any gaps between the seat cushion and the end of the footrest. This is most often recommended because the seating provides continuous leg support which is ideal when relaxing for hours in front of a good movie. Octane always uses genuine top grain leather on this portion of the seat. Many other brands replace this with a synthetic look-a-like that saves the other brand money but lacks longer term durability and performance.

Extra Plush Fiber Fill

The fiber fill used is always the highest grade which ensures consistency and resiliency. The fill gives the seating an extra degree of softness which improves the comfort.

1.8 Pound High Density Foam

Foam density determines the firmness of the seating in furniture. Using a high-density foam will result in a harder seat that maintains its shape more after standing up. Higher density foams are typically used in more contemporary furniture where lower density tends to exist more in traditional and transitional styles. There is a delicate balance because density will also determine the long-term shape of the foam. The higher density will retain shape for longer after years of use. Our thoughts are that a medium to firm density is best and for that reason we prefer a 1.8 pound density foam. Excellent to sit in and superb durability.

Heavy Gauge No-Sag Sinuous Springs

The springs for the foundation for the inner foam and fill core along with the frame. The give the seat a buoyancy and bounce so that when one leans back, you do not eventually hit the frame. Octane only uses heavy gauge steel in the sourcing of the springs. They are flexible and supple to movement as well as long lasting.

Full Lower Lumbar Support

Gel Infused Memory Foam

Memory foam is the new wonder product in bedding and mattress comfort. The inclusion of a memory foam topper inside of the seat cushion will give each and every Octane seat that extra special feel. This is the cherry on the top that takes the comfort to the next level.

Individual Pocketed Coils

Pocket coils are another key driver of quality and comfort. These are individually wrapped coils that are grouped and then included in the seat cushion. The longevity of the seat quality is improved using coils over just a foam core that will wear down over years and eventually change shape. With coils, there is less of that risk and it takes its lessons from the mattress market which use a coil concept over a pure foam core. This has proved to be the long term winner in comfort and design.

Reinforced Corner Joints

Frame corners that are reinforced with brackets last longer through everyday wear and tear. They ensure the shell under all the upholstery and material stays intact and strong.

Kiln Dried Hardwood Frame

Kiln dried hardwood results in a stronger finished product that will remain resistant and strong to regular everyday usage. The kiln dried hard woods are used on the actual supporting structures of the frame like the base and arm rests supports and then an MDF is used to create the filler between that frame - for instance as shown around the cup holder.

Hopefully, this cut-away and corresponding bullet points demonstrate the huge amount of extra effort that our factory and design team goes into to deliver what we feel is the finest media room seating on the planet today, for the money. It is not our goal to deliver a product that we are going to have issues with after 2 years. Our goal is to create a wonderful experience that you will enjoy for years and years as you kick back and relax to your favorite movies and television shows.

Stainless Black Steel Cup Holders

There are a number of new and exciting accessories that have come into the Octane line this month – as well as some material changes to many of the components in the products, like power buttons and cup holders. These changes are improvements to the quality of the product that are part of our annual review of our product line-up.

As the Octane brand continues to grow and develop, we have focused our energy on delivering a truly world-class product, where we control every aspect of the production and development. The end result is that our customers win, and we move forward in our quest to innovate comfort from innovation. With that said, check out these beautiful new black brushed stainless steel cup holders on the in-stock line-up. These black cups are standard on the majority of the in-stock models now but if you prefer stainless steel, that is easily available as an alternative.

Aluminum Tray Tables

Another exciting addition to the accessory options are our new aluminum tray tables. We love our standard black tables and spent a long time finding the best material surface for that item. But if you want an upgrade, go with this new table.

The finish is again brushed, so that one does not see fingerprints, and the surface is highly durable and easy to clean. This is a superb consideration if you are in the market for new Octane seats with tray tables.

The post on this tray – like the standard black trays – is made from solid stainless and is very heavy and durable. It slides in and out of the front insert easily so that the table can be removed as required when no longer needing it.
