So, what is the best leather? The best quality leather will depend on these important factors, most notably:

Type of animal and breed

Physical location and climate where the animal lived

The portion of the hide the leather was cut from (see diagram below)

The layer of the hide that is used (top grain, full grain, split)

Quality and skill of the processing and tanning

Different breeds of cows will produce different quality hides due to their genetics and environment. Hot climates tend to have insects that bite the animal and leave scars whereas cold climates don’t suffer from pests as much. Certain breeds might have more protective hair or thicker skins due to the weather.

Different portions of the hide also yield different quality leather. For instance, the lower portion, as shown in the diagram above, tends to have looser fibers that make up the hide. The looser fibers sponge and swell when wet. Lower portions of the hide also tend to get marked much easier from insects and scrapes like barbed wire fencing. There are also more wrinkles in the hide around the legs, neck and head. These scars and wrinkles become permanent and are almost impossible to remove in the processing of the leather.

Buying leather with more horizontal fibers wears out quickly because they can readily pull apart. Vertically running fibers, however, are the strongest. In other words, the higher the number of vertical fibers, the better.

Full Grain Leather

Full grain leather comes from the top layer of the hide. It includes all the grain with it – hence the name full grain leather. This type of leather retains the inherent toughness, as well as the imperfections because there are no surface alterations or splitting.

It is the highest quality leather and the only one suitable for saddleback. Thus, it is also the most expensive. Working with this leather material is challenging. It absorbs body oils and develops a patina over time – a characteristic that attributes to its popularity.

Top grain is the second highest grade of leather. Usually, to obtain top grain leather, the top layer of skin from blemished hides is split. The surface is sanded to get rid of inherent imperfections. Pigmentation or staining gives the leather an attractive look.

This also makes top grain leather smoother and more flexible than the full grain. Although this type of leather is strong and durable, it tends to stretch permanently over time. It is used to produce suede and nubuck. Most high-end products, such as handbags and jackets, are comprised of top grain leather.

Corrected Grain (Bottom Cut/Split) Leather

Corrected grain or split leather, also known as genuine leather, is produced using the skin layers that remain after the top is split off and from the corium predominantly (see diagram above). Split leather tends to be tougher in texture due to the fact that is resides under the top layers and is mostly used in applications that don’t require the leather to be soft like furniture backs and sides. Just like the top grain leather, it is also sanded to remove natural imperfections. Usually, the surface is spray painted and embossed with a leather-like pattern to resemble natural appearance. However, the processing alters the inherent breathability of the leather.

Corrected or split leather also known as genuine leather

Derived from layers remaining after top is split off.

Tougher texture, mainly for furniture backs and sides applications.

Bonded Leather

Bonded leather made from hide leftovers, including dust and shavings.

Bonding with polyurethane or latex on a fiber sheet base.

Often spray-painted to mimic full or top grain appearance.

Bonded leather is made up of leftovers of the hide. This includes the dust and shavings.

These are bonded together using polyurethane or latex on top of a fiber sheet. It is often spray-painted to look like full or top grain leather. You can’t determine the percentage of natural leather unless the manufacturer chooses to disclose it – which is very unlikely. Bonded leather is the lowest (and the cheapest) grade of leather.

Exploring the Diversity of Leather

Though there are four basic types of leather, you can find a wide range of options based on the percentage of organic material, durability, and the finishing process.

Aniline Leather

It is the most natural leather with minimal resistance to soiling. Generally, soft and tanned animal hides, such as Napa, are subject to dying in a drum with aniline dyes exclusively. Aniline dyes are translucent and water-soluble dyes that bring out the natural markings, scars, and wrinkles in the hide.

It develops a natural patina over time. As this process is suited to only high-quality animal hides, it is one of the most expensive leathers in the world. It also needs regular upkeep.

Oil Tanned Leather

Producing oil-tanned leather involves processing it with natural oils after the initial vegetable tanning is complete. Most tanneries use fish oil, particularly cod oil, for the tanning process. The purpose is to create a remarkably smooth and flexible finish. These qualities enhance its workability making oil-tanned leather more suitable for textured leather products.

The oil treatment also lends higher water and moisture resistance. It can also fend of scuff marks or minor scratches quickly, a feature all outdoor leather products must have. But most importantly, oil-tanned leather is revered for its beauty. It is available in a variety of stunning colors and finishes. It also develops a gorgeous patina over time.

Finished Split Leather

Split leather is a single layer of leather separated from the animal hide. Usually, the middle or lower section of the hide is used to produce split leather. When it is coated with a polymer and embossed to resemble natural leather-like look, it becomes finished split leather. You can also treat this type of leather with various embossing patterns and finishing touches. Finishing is required to get a surface resembling the finished full-grain leather.

However, it is almost always used in low-stress applications as finished split leather is considerably weaker than grain leather. It is also virtually impossible for the naked eye to differentiate between full grain pigmented leather and finished split leather.

Leather accessories and furniture.

Pigmented Leather

To create pigmented leather, a polymer surface coating containing pigments is applied to create the desired look and properties. It is rarely good-quality as a layer of colored polyurethane and varnish often alters the qualities of the hide.

Pigmented leather has uniform surface and color without any inherent defects of the animal skin. It is extremely durable and requires less maintenance. It also offers high resistance against scratches and stains.

Sometimes, however, over-coating can lend it plastic-like an appearance. The pigmentation also reduces its breathability. Due to its durability and low maintenance, pigmented leather is often regarded as the best leather for furniture, especially in the affordable price range.

COMMON USES:
Furniture, accessories, and car upholstery.

Corrected Grain Pigmented Leather

While preparing corrected grain pigmented leather, manufacturers subject the hides to sanding and buffing to remove imperfections such as scars and bite marks. Manufacturers often emboss the treated surface with artificial grain and sprayed with a sealer top-coat. This coating lends a more plastic feel to the leather.

The look of corrected grain leather may vary considerably, depending on the embossing and pigmentation process. There are different grades of corrected grain leather. Normally, less corrected grain means better leather quality. It is perhaps the most widely-used leather around the world.

COMMON USES:
Making jackets, handbags, messenger bags, accessories, footwear, and furniture.

Latigo

Latigo is nothing but cowhide leather specifically designed for outdoor use. A combination of chrome and vegetable tanning is used to make Latigo leather. It brings out the best of both processes, resulting in leather that is durable and supple.

Some tanners may also infused it with oils and waxes through various methods such as hot-stuffing, wet-stuffing, and fat liquoring. The twofold tanning process makes it one of the most expensive leathers in the market.

It is suitable for rough usage as it has strong resistance to moisture and sweat. It can quickly turn from rigid to supple in texture. Although Burgundy is the traditional color of Latigo leather, it is now available in shades of brown, black, and red.

Riding tacks, straps, belts, pet collars, leashes, belts, saddlebacks, cinches, and army accouterments.

Chrome Tanned Leather

Chrome-tanned leather uses chromium salts (chromium sulfates) for tanning the leather instead of vegetable tannins or aldehyde chemicals. Chrome tanned leather is supple, resilient, moderately durable, and has better water resistance. You can use a variety of dyes to produce leather with several different vibrant colors.

However, chrome tanning has extremely grave environmental costs, especially in developing countries. The lack of proper recycling measures often allows the toxic wastewater to sip into the groundwater supplies and also affect the soil. Also, chrome leather is not suitable for patterning and stamping, owing to its supple nature.

Making products that don’t require stiffness or structural toughness such as jackets, bags, gloves, and upholstery.

Embossed Leather

Embossed leather is leather with artificial patterns imprinted on the natural grain of animal skin using heat and high pressure. Typically, steel plates with different engraved designs are used to create embossed leather for a variety of applications, including upholstery and accessories.

The most common types of embossing include blind embossing, gold embossing, and color imprint. While blind embossing involves imprinting patterns without any color, gold embossing includes using gold films for imprinting. Color imprint, on the other hand, uses color films for the embossment. Sometimes, the leather may also be bonded with foam and lining to allow the embossed patterns to retain their shape for longer.

Nubuck Leather

Aniline dyed leather is typically used to produce nubuck leather, which comes from the top grain of the hide. It is sanded on the grain side to create a velvety appearance. This velvety appearance and feel often attract shoppers into buying nubuck leather products.

The buffing or sanding removes the visible markings and defects in the top grain. Staining or dying further removes the defects left after buffing. Being made from top-grain leather, nubuck is more durable compared to suede or bonded leather. However, it is susceptible to environmental factors such as mud, dirt, and grit. That’s why nubuck shoes are suited for trekking and other outdoor activities.

Crust:

Crust leather is tanned and dried, but not dyed. Depending on the tanning process, it is called either chrome crust or vegetable crust. However, crust leather is not processed until it is dyed. It has all the physical properties including size, thickness, fullness, looseness of grain, and grain damages.

Pull-Up Leather:

Pull-up leather or oily pull-up leather stretches over time, providing a unique worn-in effect. It is considered a sign of high quality. Usually, semi-aniline animal hides are used to make this type of leather.
The waxes or oils often darken the original coloration. When stretched and pulled apart, it reveals unique light-colored variations. You can see a beautiful patina developing over time and with wear, providing an aesthetic edge to the leather product.

Suede

Suede is one of the most popular leather types with a napped finish. Made from the underside of the animal hide such as lamb, goat, calf, pig, and deer, it comes with an attractive finish. As it is thinner and less durable, suede is also vulnerable to damage. It is one of the best grades of leather revered for its look and feel, not durability.

Pebble Grain Leather:

Pebble is a type of grain or texture of the leather. The top side of such leather mimics a pattern of small pebbles. This texture can be both, natural and artificially embossed. However, natural pebble pattern is not consistent. It is one of the distinguishing features between natural and artificial pebbles. You can find it in almost all types of leather, ranging from full-grain premium hides to lower-grade skins.

Kidskin Leather

Kidskin leather comes from the hide of lambs or young goats. It is flexible, durable, and supple. It is also extremely lightweight. However, being high-quality leather, it is also one of the most expensive grades of leather. It is less costly than calfskin and requires high maintenance.

Primarily to make gloves for women, kids, and men.

Antique Grain Leather

Also called as distressed leather, it is a type of leather treated to get the rugged appearance of antique or vintage leather. More often than not, the leather surface gets applied with an uneven or partially rubbed-off contrasting top-coat revealing a pale underlying color. This weathered look often tends to attract most shoppers, especially when shopping for leather accessories and furniture.

Printed Leather:

Printed leather is often stamped with a design or texture to create a unique look. From genuine Italian leather to lower-grade hides, you can find printed leather in almost all price ranges.
Manufacturers often use screen printing or inkjet printing process to imprint patterns, symbols, and ornaments on the leather. In recent years, advancements in the development of leather printing ink have made it possible to print beautiful, intricate, and multi-colored patterns.

Chrome-Free Leather:

Chrome-free leather is made from alternative tanning processes such as vegetable tanning or aldehyde tanning. The environmental pollution resulting from the chrome-based tanning process has compelled many governments and tanneries to adopt these chrome-free tanning processes. The processed leather has almost all the chrome-tanned leather qualities such as higher shrink resistance, more resilience, and flexural strength. Further, there are no toxic effluents degrading the environment.

Waxy Hand Leather

Waxy hand leather comes with a grease or wax finish. The soft and scratch-sensitive leather surface develops a beautiful patina over time upon folding, scratching and stretching.

Upholstery, shoes, handbags, and different types of leather furniture.

Tooling Calf Leather

Tooling calf is thin and lightweight vegetable-tanned leather. As the surface is unfinished, it is suitable for leatherwork such as printing, stamping, carving, and engraving. It has a more buttery and supple texture.

COMMON USES:
Insides, interiors, and linings.

Saffiano Leather

Wax finished leather with a cross hatch texture created by a machine. Usually made from calfskin.

Patent Leather

Leather coated with a lacquer, usually plastic, to give a slick, mirror-like finish.

Nappa Leather

“Nappa” is a generic name for soft, dyed leather usually used in advertising. There is no distinct test to characterize nappa leather.

Good Hand Leather

It is highly soft leather. As it feels good against the skin, it is known as good hand leather.

Skirting Leather:

Skirting leather is made from the sides of cattle hide. Heavyweight, full-thickness skirting leather offers exceptional strength, making it ideal for making saddles and bridles. Skirting leather is prized for its beauty, workability, and affordable cost of the end-product.

Often used to manufacture saddles and bridles.

Semi-Aniline Leather

Semi-aniline leather consists of a light surface coating with a small amount of pigment. Thus, it is stronger than aniline leather but maintains its natural look. It also exhibits stain resistance to some extent.

Leather Thickness

Thinner Hides

The leather thickness and weight play a critical role in deciding what the end product will be. For example, thinner hides (1-3 ounce) are used to make the leather jacket, furniture, moldings, linens, and embossing.

Thick hides

Thick leather, on the other hand, is often used to make items such as leather belt, knife sheaths, holsters, saddlebags, and leather dog collar.

The ounce is the standard unit of measuring the leather thickness. However, some leather thickness charts may also use millimeter and inch as the measuring unit. Typically, an ounce of leather equals 1/64 of an inch. However, the leather thickness varies slightly as the hide doesn’t have a uniform thickness. Split leather may have a more consistent thickness than a rawhide. But, you will still find some variation.

How Leather Is Made

Leather tanning is a complex and lengthy process. Though mechanization has made it less labor intensive, it still consists of a complex series of treatments that require considerable time and energy. The purpose of the tanning process is to alter the protein structure of the skin to increase its durability, texture, and appearance.

As mentioned earlier, there are many varieties of leather. However, all types of leathers have to go through four fundamental stages. This includes preparatory steps, tanning, re-tanning, and finishing. Sometimes, a further sub-process of surface coating may be added to the process. Before sending to the tannery, the animal skin needs to be cured. Although curing is not considered a part of the tanning process, it is the first crucial step in obtaining leather.

Usually, the animal is killed and skinned before the body heat leaves the tissues. The freshly removed skin or hide is immediately cured with salt to remove water. The skin is allowed to remain in the shade until it is completely dry. The cured skin or animal hide is then transported to the tanneries for further processing.

Preparatory Steps

The cured skin or animal hide needs to be prepared for the tanning process.

Although there are various preparatory processes, the purpose of each process is to remove unwanted raw skin components. The tannery may not perform all of them, depending on the quality and type of the desired product.

At this stage, the cured hide is soaked in water for several hours to several days. This process not only restores the moisture lost during salting, but helps to remove dirt, debris, blood, and excess animal fats.

This process removes subcutaneous material from the flesh side. The pelt is passed through a machine to remove the fat, muscle, and flesh mechanically. Usually, this process takes place after slaughter, soaking, or liming. At this stage, or after tanning, hides may be split into different layers.

Hair is removed at this stage using mechanical instruments such as rollers and blades.

This process involves cleaning and soaking the rawhide in acids or salts to prevent decomposition. It helps the penetration of tanning agents such as chromium and aldehydes. Stronger pickling agents are used to preserve hides for several months.

The hide is soaked in sulfuric acid to lower the pH after pickling.

This process loosens the fibers and allows the skin to absorb various tanning chemicals. Usually, sodium sulfide and hydrated lime are used to treat the hide, as they remove keratinous material such as hair and wool. Fats get hydrolyzed as the pH increases. Water is absorbed into the skin fibers, resulting in a swollen skin structure.

In this process, the hide is washed with a mixture of water and ammonium chloride or ammonium sulfate. This removes water (along with any impurities) to reduce swelling.

Bating marks the end of the liming process. The flaccid skin is treated with proteolytic bating enzymes to remove non-fibrous proteins. It cleans the grain and makes the pelt smooth and silky.

Sometimes, water-based solutions and solvents are used to remove excess grease or natural fatty acids from the skin.

Tanning

The primary purpose of this process is to produce a non-decomposable and sturdy material from the raw animal hide, called leather.

Essentially, tanning converts the protein of the rawhide into a durable material. The most common tanning processes include mineral tanning, vegetable tanning, and glutaraldehyde tanning.

Vegetable tanning has been around for thousands of years. Unlike mineral tanning, it uses a naturally occurring polyphenol astringent chemical called tannin. This is usually found in bark, leaves, and branches of trees such as oak, chestnut, or mimosa. As it produces shades of deep brown, beige, yellow, and red, tannin lends a unique color and texture to the leather.

However, the process is time-consuming, laborious, and expensive. There are two types of vegetable tanning processes. The slow process takes about 30 days, while the rapid tanning process only lasts about 36 to 48 hours. Sometimes, however, the slow process can take several months, as it may require multiple treatments.

This process produces highly durable leather. So, the vegetable tanned leather is often used to make products such as saddles or holsters. The unmatched durability and distinct appearance makes this leather suitable for imprinting and intricate leatherwork such as tooling.

Mineral or chrome tanning is the most popular tanning process because it’s much quicker, affordable, and less labor intensive than the others. In 1858, it was introduced as an alternative to the expensive and time-consuming vegetable tanning process. The process can be automated and lasts a day at most. Usually, the time for chromium tanning is around 2 or 3 hours for small and thin skins. However, it can go up to 24 hours for thicker ones obtained from cattle.

The size of chrome molecules is small compared to vegetable tannin ions. As a result, chrome ions can penetrate the collagen and remove water molecules effectively. Lorentz released two films consecutively in the mid-1930s that cast a light on the history of poor land management in the US. Through his films, Lorez sought to vilify the capitalistic, greedy policies that led to widespread catastrophe in the American South.

1936

The first of his two feature films, The Plow That Broke The Plains (1936), tells the social and economic history of the Great Plains. It outlines how the prairies were initially settled. 1937

A year later, Lorentz released The River (1937). Taking a similar tone, the movie outlines the catastrophic Mississippi River floods caused by the actions of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Both movies were produced by the U.S Film Service and were intended to encourage support for Franklin D. Roosevelt’s (FDR) New Deal. The notion posited was that FDR’s New Deal benefited the American people because it would treat American soil better, reversing various policies that were causing harm to the land.

This framing set a precedent for future movies about sustainability. Lorentz put on film the idea that how we treat the land is a political issue and, therefore, up for discussion.

His provocative juxtaposition of captivating visuals highlighting stunning natural beauty next to scenes of devastation made for a persuasive, compelling argument.

Combining a serious, entertaining, creative art form with an environmental message paved the way for the future genre.

Together, they must work to prevent all sorts of threats to FernGully, including the evil spirit Hexxus whe seeks its destruction.

The film was shown in the general assembly hall of the United Nations on Earth Day and was seen as a call-to-action to prevent the overlogging of rainforests worldwide. Though, within the film, the evil spirit Hexxus is the true villain as the humans ultimately form the solution.

Once Upon a Forest

1993

A film with similar themes, Once Upon a Forest (1993) sees a cute, plucky badger orphaned by an overturned tanker that leaks poisonous gas into her forest home of Dapplewood.

This feature-length musical from Hanna Barbera casts the animal world against the human as the badger, and her friends must brave human dangers to source the medicine that will heal the forest and animals.

Both these films reflect the growing awareness of the need to protect woodland and run alongside the growing presence of the environmental movement. Greenpeace activism was more prevalent and visible, with proceeds from FernGully going to the organization.

Wall-E lives in a wasteland devoid of human inhabitants, depicting an Earth in squalor. The thinly-veiled metaphor satirizes the ineffectual responses of governments around the world and takes aim at climate-deniers unwilling to listen to the facts.

The underlying message is that government officials, politicians, celebrities, media and all individuals are all responsible for climate change and must do better. Critics debate whether the film’s use of dark humor detracts from the issues that inform the movie.

There is a lot of work that goes into creating a good home theater space.

Obviously, the TV or projection system is a major component, along with choosing the right type of seats, proper theater lighting, and, of course, the right speaker system.

But there is one aspect of a home theater that is incredibly important and must be carefully fine-tuned: the acoustics of the room. The quality of the sound – as well as the acoustics of the room – matter a lot.

When creating a home theater system, many people simply focus on the speakers. While having a great surround sound system is a key aspect, too much sound can actually create a terrible experience.

Since home theaters are often quite small (compared to a traditional movie theater), sound waves bounce around and can actually create a reverberation or echo, which results in a muddy, unclear sound.

This is where home theater acoustic panels can provide a solution.

Let’s dive in.

What are Acoustic Panels?

Acoustic panels are sound absorbing panels which are generally made of wool or foam.

Sound waves easily bounce off of hard surfaces. This softer material helps to dampen any extra echoes and reduce the number of waves rebounding throughout a space.

Acoustic panels are designed to absorb some sound waves and dampen the echoing or reverberation they can cause. They are placed throughout a room in specific, strategic spots to control the way sound waves bounce.

The ultimate purpose of an acoustic panel is to control the Reverberation Time (RT) in a room.

This RT can be different depending on the space. For instance, in areas where complete silence is important (such as a library), more panels would need to be installed, whereas having fewer panels in a home theater can help to control the sound – rather than muffle it entirely.

Acoustic panels have an NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating which measures how much of the sound it can absorb. The NRC rating is equivalent to the amount of sound that the panel will absorb.

For instance, an NRC rating of .70 means that it absorbs 70% of the sound and reflects 30% back into the room. Generally, the thicker the panel is, the higher NRC rating it will have.

But acoustic panels do not just
absorb sound and muffle the
reverberation;

They also diffuse the sound so it creates a pleasant
listening experience. If the panels absorb too much
sound and there is no echo or reverberation, it creates a
dead space – which is quite unpleasant when you are
trying to enjoy a film.

Diffusion helps to reflect some of the sound
back into the room so that it sounds natural ,
without interfering and creating a muffled
noise. This helps to create a more immersive,
“surround sound” experience in a smaller
home theater space.

Acoustic Panels vs Bass Traps

There are two types of panels that can be used to control sound frequencies in a home theater: acoustic panels and bass traps.

What Do Bass Traps Do?

While acoustic panels are used to absorb harsher sounds of mid-range and high frequencies, bass traps are made for low frequency sound muffling, such as bass drums, thunder, or other deep, low sounds. These kinds of sounds are widely used in horror and thriller films as they create a rather unsettling noise – which adds to the eeriness or tension of a scene.

Failing to install panels specifically for this type of sound can create a lot of reverberation and make it difficult to hear noises other than the bass.

While acoustic panels are typically made from foam or other fibers, bass traps are comprised of cotton denim which is highly absorbent. This helps to diminish the reverberation that occurs when low-frequency sounds are played at a high volume.

Bass traps are typically about three inches thick, which helps to absorb much of the extra noise so that only a true, clear sound reverberates back.

It is generally best to use a combination of both types of panels in a home theater to create the best acoustics for an optimal viewing experience.

Home Theater Acoustic Panel Placement

The acoustic panel placement and positioning can have an incredible impact on the sound absorption quality. Putting them in places where sound does not naturally reflect will essentially render the panels useless. You need to find reflection points for optimal placement planning.

The first reflection point in a room is the area where the most disruptive echoing occurs. It is commonly the primary surface that a sound wave contacts coming out of the speaker.

You must eliminate this reflection point in order to create a clear, crisp sound. Thankfully, it is pretty easy to find. You simply need a mirror, something to mark with (such as sticky notes or tape) and a person to help you.

First, turn on a fairly consistent sound from the speakers (such as a song) with a person holding a mirror on one parallel sidewall.

This person should then move the mirror around the wall until the speakers are visible in the reflection.

Mark this location by placing a sticky note or piece of tape on these surfaces.

There will be a reflection point on all of the walls. However, if your room is not a square or rectangular shape, there may be some reflection points which are in odd places and there may be points on the floor or ceiling, too.

How Many Acoustic Panels Do I Need?

There is no general answer for the number of acoustic panels for a home theater. You cannot get a good recommendation based on a feature like square footage – because room acoustics are dependent on so many factors. Two rooms that are the same size could require a different number of panels due to the placement of reflection points, power of the speakers, or materials used in the room.

There are some factors which will require you to install more panels.

For instance, rooms that are square or L-shaped need more, as they create additional reflection points. If the walls are made of concrete or there are additional hard surfaces (such as a wooden staircase or multiple wooden doors), then more panels will need to be added.

Proper acoustic panel placement is dependent on the location. So, once you have located all of the possible reflection points for each speaker in a room, it is time to place the appropriate acoustic panels or bass traps at each point.

Sidewall

These panels are arguably the most important, as these
points have the most reflection and can have the
greatest impact on the sound quality, since our ears are
closest to these reverberations. You should have your
acoustic panels with the higher NRCs at these points. If
there are any windows on the side walls, it is
recommended that you hang fabric curtains to help
muffle additional reflection points where panels cannot
be placed.

Front Wall

It is recommended that two acoustic panels are placed
on either side of screen or TV and face the
back of the room. If you have a perforated screen
(such as a projector screen made of fabric) you
can put panels behind it to help reduce
these additional reflection points.

Rear Wall

It is best to put diffusion panels on the
rear walls which help to disperse
sound waves – rather than muffle them.
This creates a “livelier”
sound.

Ceiling

You do not necessarily have to place any panels
on the ceiling, unless the floors are made
of a hard, reflective surface such as
cement, hardwood, or ceramic tile. In this
case, it is often easier to simply carpet,
the floors or place rugs on reflection
points.

Blackout Fabrics

Perforated Screen Fabrics

Perforated screen fabrics have tiny holes or perforations all over to facilitate the passage of sound.

If you are going to set up your center and front speakers behind the projector screen, using this fabric allows the sound to travel through the screen’s perforations, creating acoustic transparency.

ProWhite

Frequently used for roll-down screens, ProWhite can hang flatter than other materials because of its rigidity and stiff structure that will kink if bent too sharply. This material is typically best for a screen installation where stretching won’t be possible, and the situation calls for a more rigid build.

Standard Matte White

Arguably one of the most commonly used fabrics for screens, your displayed image will appear uniform from any viewing angle because the fabric works to diffuse light in all directions. ProWhite

While you can definitely project your image directly onto a blank, white wall, the quality of the picture is just heightened so much more when you use a projector screen. And if you don’t want to make an entire screen setup, or only don’t use your projector enough to justify building a DIY screen, there are a few ways to create a viewing screen.

Inflatable Projector Screens

Less expensive than buying a permanent projector screen, but pricier than making your own DIY screen, these types can be taken up and down and stored easily between movie nights.

Projector Screen Paint

Using this special paint to create your home theater screen is a great choice, but is also on the more expensive end of the scale.

This paint was specifically designed to create a screen on your wall or other surfaces, be it plastic, particleboard, cardboard, or metal.

Because matte or flat finishes have a duller appearance, they reflect less light and display the image better, so choosing a matte or flat finish is essential to ensuring the best quality of the picture.

Window Shades

An easy way to set up a makeshift projector screen. Rolldown window shades that are big enough are a great option because they also keep your viewing room dark while displaying the images.

If your sheets are on the low end of thread counts, you can fold them in half or hang multiple layers of sheets to enhance the thickness. Make sure the sheet does not have a pattern or print on it for the best quality.

Wrapping Paper

If you need a temporary projector screen, look no further than the back of your closet!

Wrapping paper that is thick and sturdy with a glossy white bottom is ideal for transforming into a screen, and you can attach it directly to the wall or to a frame with tape.

However, this material is incredibly fragile, and any slight movement or gust will cause rips and tears in the paper, and it cannot become damp at all. Any damage to the paper, even just a crease, will show up in the displayed image and distort the final picture.

Pick the Correct Mount

So, you have determined the location of your screen and the optimal material for it.

Now it is time to consider how you will install the screen—whether that is directly onto the wall, a portable frame, or as a simple hanging.

And when it comes to the frame material, your choice will depend on a variety of factors like budget, indoor or outdoor location, mechanics, aesthetics, and more.

In general, if you are looking for a more permanent screen installation, you can use sturdier frame materials like metal piping or reinforced wood, and more supportive connectors. But if your screen can be more portable or temporary, you can use lighter frame materials like PVC pipes.

Let’s take a closer look at your projector screen installation and frame materials.

Frame Base Mounting

This is the base mount of the screen material itself.

What kind of frame material you choose will have some effect on the types of mounting you can do, but generally, this frame is what you stretch the screen fabric over and secure it.

Once this is completed, you can build a simple a-frame legged base for this frame, to allow it to stand upright on its own. It is recommended to use a heavier material for these legs, to avoid the screen becoming overbalanced and toppling over mid-viewing.

Wall or Ceiling Mount

You can purchase wall or ceiling mounting brackets at any of your local hardware retailers. Depending on the material of the screen, the rigidity, and the weight, you will need to select the right hardware for your needs.

Typically, if you can find an adjustable bracket that holds your projector screen at least 1 foot away from the wall itself, that is a great option for any home theater.

The space between screen and wall will be beneficial for sound system reverberation and bass distribution and keeps the screen material away from any variations of drywall or other surface topography that could cause issues with the image display quality.

To use a wall or ceiling mount, you will need screws and a drill, as well as a bubble level tool to ensure the brackets are installed evenly and the screen will be straight when mounted. If your screen is heavy enough, you may need to use a stud finder to act as sturdy anchor points for the mounting brackets.

Frame Materials

Just like the fabric options for creating the projector screen itself, choosing the right frame material is essential to creating the best DIY home theater screen. From lighter materials to the sturdier options, you need to consider aspects of usage such as the permanence of your screen, whether it is for indoor or outdoor viewing, and ease of storage.

PVC Frame

This is a lightweight material and is great for creating a portable or temporary screen setup.

Using PVC piping is a great option for easy storage, as the parts that make up the frame can come apart easily and be tucked away securely when not in use.

However, due to its light nature, PVC frames are not ideal for outdoor viewing, as your setup would be very vulnerable to any gusts of wind.

Metal Frame

Using galvanized metal pipe for your frame is a good option for a sturdy screen setup. For easier construction, it is recommended that you use galvanized pipe with threaded ends, as well as threaded elbow connectors.

A metal frame is ideal for installation outside, as it is weather-resistant and will last for a very long time without the need for repair or replacement. You can insert the structure right into the points on the lawn where the width of the frame will be placed for a permanent outdoor theater setup.

Wood Frame

A typical choice for DIY projector screen frames, using hardwoods will minimize screen warping.

The recommended wood choice is kiln-dried poplar for its durability and strength, while still being fairly light for easier mounting.

One last step before you can sit back and enjoy your new projector screen is the backing material. This is a layer of soft padding that should be placed between the backer board and the screen fabric.

This is not only for visual aesthetics, hiding any mistakes like screw heads or tiny gaps in the backer board, but it will also create a smoother screen surface.

It is generally suggested that you purchase the material at least 4 inches wider and longer than your planned screen dimensions, to allow room for construction or mistakes.

Avoid any material that has textured patterns or decorative stitching that could affect the smoothness of the screen itself. The following are options for simple backing material:

Curtain Backing or Black-Out Cloth

Because it is a light, opaque material used to make curtains block out light, this fabric makes a good screen backing.

Cotton or Polyester Quilt Batting

Possibly the better of these two options, quilt batting has a plush thickness that is ideal for screen backing, essentially forming a soft underbelly to support your screen material and give it denser light-proofing.

Wall Color

It goes without saying that your wall will need to be big enough for your projector screen, but the color of the wall is also important.

Brightly colored walls are not ideal for your home theater, as they will distract from the screen display and possibly reflect unwanted ambient light.

Typically, white, beige, or gray are the best choices for wall color and depend on the number of lumens that your projector produces.

A good rule of thumb is to go darker if your projector’s specs say that it produces more than 3,500 lumens. This will ensure no stray light projection will reflect and damage the picture quality.

Calculations for Your DIY Projector Screen

There are a couple of last considerations for planning out your DIY projector screen, including how big the screen should be, and your projector’s throw distance, which determines how far the screen needs to be from the projector lens.

How to Measure For Your Projector Screen Size

One of the best ways to determine the size of projector screen you will need is through aspect ratio, and what your viewing needs are.

For general settings, such as watching a film or TV show, you will want a screen height that is at least 1/6 as high as the distance from the screen to the farthest chair you might use.

For more expansive home theater setups or presentation setups such as boardrooms or classrooms. To properly view any small media details, the screen height here should be 1/4 as high as the distance to the chair furthest away.

HDTV (16:9) and Widescreen (16:10)

A slightly larger screen is needed here. This screen height should be about 1/3 the distance from the screen to seating.

Cinema Video (2.35:1)

Despite this aspect ratio seeming close to traditional sizes, you can use the 1/3 measure with this screen, however, you may find a screen height of 1/4 the distance between seat and screen to be more visually appealing.

Throw Distance

The last consideration for your screen is how far away it should be installed. This is determined in part by your projector’s throw distance or the length of the image display.

The equation for any given projector is the width of the image (W) relative to the throw distance (D) and is known as the throw ratio D/W.

The most common projector throw ratio is 2.0, so in that instance, for each foot of image width, the projector needs to be 2 feet removed from the screen (D/W = 2/1 = 2.0).

As long as the throw distance is correctly measured, your image will fit on the screen and have great visual quality.
